On February 12, 2025, the Office of Merchant Marine and Ports (OMMP) has celebrated its 60th anniversary, marking decades of achievements that have strengthened Tunisia’s role as a key maritime transport and trade hub. This occasion highlights the OMMP’s contribution to the National Economy and its commitment to modernization and innovation.
Established in 1965 as the “National Ports Authority,” the OMMP initially managed the Ports of Tunis, La Goulette, Bizerte, Sousse, and Sfax, overseeing ship piloting, towing, and Port services. With the expansion of maritime trade, additional Ports, including Rades, Gabes, and Zarzis, were integrated, reinforcing Tunisia’s strategic position.
In 1998, the OMMP’s mandate was extended to maritime administration, covering regulations, fleet management, and safety, leading to its renaming as the “Office of Merchant Marine and Ports.” Today, over 1,200 employees ensure the smooth operation and security of Tunisia’s maritime and Port sectors.
The OMMP plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of ships, goods, and passengers, handling nearly 30 million tons of cargo annually—98% of Tunisia’s foreign trade. It continues to modernize infrastructure, enhance safety, and foster investments to strengthen its position as a strategic economic partner.
Looking ahead, the OMMP is developing the Port Master Plan – Horizon 2040 to enhance Port infrastructure, logistics, and competitiveness while integrating environmental and social considerations. Digital transformation is also a priority, with the adoption of smart technologies and cloud-based systems to optimize Port and maritime operations.
Committed to sustainability, the OMMP is working towards “Green Ports” by adopting renewable energy, controlling emissions, and ensuring compliance with international environmental standards, securing Tunisia’s place in the future of global maritime trade.
