Port of Zarzis: An economic pole for the development of southern Tunisia

Le port de Zarzis : Un pôle économique au service du développement du Sud Tunisien

L’OMMP investit 30 MD entre 2017 et 2018 :

  • 26.5 MD for dredging
  • 1.5 MD investment between March and July 2017
  • 2 MD in 2018

In its first commissioning, the ferry terminal of Zarzis port assured three stopovers made by the national shipowner CTN hosting 3000 passengers and 1000 cars.
This experience consolidates OMMP’s efforts to reinvigorate the port of Zarzis through the implementation of an investment envelope of 1.5 MD during the period from 7 March to 5 July 2017 for the development a passenger terminal on an area 5000 m² equipped with all the modern facilities required for customs and police formalities.
This terminal has a reception structure for the pedestrian passengers on an area of 700 m² built in a modern architecture encompassing all the facilities of arrival and departure.

This action was accompanied by the development of the main access north of the port to ensure a better flow of this traffic.
It should be recalled that the port of Zarzis underwent at the beginning of 2017a dredging and rehabilitation of the depths to be situated between 10 and 11 m with an investment of 26.5 MD. This project aims to ensure the safety of navigation in the channel and the harbor basin and gives a new impetus to encourage operators and shipowners to develop new regular shipping lines with the port and to open new horizons for the port.

Efforts currently being made by OMMP in coordination with the economic business park of ZARZIS and CTN to create the best conditions and advance procedures for the reinforcement of passenger activity projects in 2018. These investments estimated cost of 2 million dinars in the construction of a new passenger terminal and a shelter for cars outside the harbour space on one hand, the promotion of the port and its potential for the other hand.
In addition, the CTN will organize during the year 2018 a trip every two weeks for two months to the port of Zarzis to accommodate 10,000 passengers and 3,800 accompanied cars.

In order to adapt the volume of investments realized with the estimated traffic projections and in order to respond to the incessant demand for the establishment and the sustainability of this shipping line, the CTN is called upon to establish an adequate promotional plan for this line and announce in advance the travel program by providing a weekly stopover at the port of Zarzis, thus to decongest the port of La Goulette as well as to grow the investment undertaken in the port of Zarzis.
